Merlin, Antoine-Christophe

Merlin, Antoine-Christophe
(1762-1833)
   political figure
Known as Merlin de Thionville, after his birthplace, Antoine-Christophe Merlin, an attorney in Metz, was, during the revolution of 1789, elected to the Legislative Assembly (1791), where he supported the confiscation of the properties of the émigrés. Reelected to the Convention (1792), he sat with the montagnard faction. Sent on a mission to Mainz, he could not prevent the surrender of that city (July 1793). He contributed to the fall of max-imilien Robespierre and openly supported the repression of former jacobins during the Thermi-dorian Convention. A member of the Council of Five Hundred and director of the Post (1798), he was opposed to Napoléon Bonaparte (see napoléon i) as consul for life.
